The Isle of Mull

The Isle of Mull is situated off the West coast of Scotland and forms one of the Inner Hebrides. It is accessible by ferry boats that run throughout the year, at frequent intervals during daylight hours. The major point of entry to the island is from Oban to Craignure, though there are ferry boats that run from Lochaline to Fishnish and Kilchoan to Tobermory. The mainland town of Oban is connected by a railway line to Glasgow as well as by a good road network, thus bringing the island within a few short hours travelling time, from a major city and its international airport.

The Isle of Mull offers visitors a wide variety of places to see, many of which lie well within reach of the 120 miles of road that encircle or cross the island. Dramatic sea, sky and landscapes seem to appear around every corner, and yet, although only 30 miles in length, the island has over 300 miles of coastline, nine mountains over 2,000 feet in height and the second highest mountain in the Hebrides, Ben More, which stands at 3,169 feet and rises directly from sea level.

Ben More stands within full view of the Kinloch Hotel, each lying on opposite sides of Loch Scridain.

Whether you are interested in the geology of the island, (It is one of the most researched in the world.), or are interested in the historic houses, sites or monuments that are here, you will be sure to find a broad selection of places to visit.

If you are thinking of photography or painting, you will find no lack of subjects.

Of equal interest, is the large variety of wildlife that abounds on the island. It is possible to see both Golden eagles and Sea Eagles, Otters, Buzzards, Deer, Wildcats, Polecats, Seals, Wild Goats, Whales, Porpoises and....... well, the list is a big one and I am sure that you don't want me to tell you everything..... after all, there have to be some surprises.

Oh! Yes. The walking...... I almost forgot. This really is wonderful walking territory, with many beautiful coastal walks and a variety of high level routes. The low level walks along the coast encompass such remarkable sights as the Arches of Carsaig, The Fossil Tree at Burg and the Fossil Leaf Beds at Ardtun. All of these lie within easy reach of the Kinloch Hotel. And Ben More...... Well, catch it on a fine day and you will enjoy the opportunity of remarkable views that extend to The Cuillins of Skye in the North, Ben Nevis to the North-east and Jura to the South, plus so much more besides. And of course, Ben More is directly opposite The Kinloch Hotel.
